Important questions about transformer testing

How is the testing program for a repaired transformer determined?

We tailor the program to the transformer type, nominal values, scope of repair, applicable regulations, and required acceptance testing. Standard tests are supplemented with customer- or damage-specific measurements as needed. The scope, limit values, and documentation are agreed upon before the test date.

What do open-circuit and short-circuit measurements show on a transformer?

No-load measurement provides information about the magnetic circuit and no-load losses, while short-circuit measurement describes, among other things, impedance and load-dependent losses. Deviations can indicate winding, connection, or core problems. The evaluation is carried out by comparison with target, type, or previous measured values.

What information do measurements of the translation and winding resistance provide?

The translation test checks whether the voltage ratio and switching position are plausible. Winding resistances can indicate contact problems, unbalanced connections, or winding deviations. Temperature, measurement method, and reference values must be considered during interpretation.

When are partial discharge or lightning impulse tests useful?

These specialized tests are used depending on the voltage level, design, scope of repair, damage hypothesis, and required verification. They answer different questions than resistance or translation measurements and require a suitable, low-noise setup. We tailor the benefits, load, and acceptance criteria to each specific project.

What specifications do we need for a customer-specific transformer acceptance test?

Required information includes nominal and circuit data, relevant standards, agreed-upon tests, limit values, and the desired documentation format. Previous test reports and customer-specific specifications facilitate comparison. Any open questions are clarified before assembly and testing to ensure the results are clearly evaluable.
