Important questions about pump testing

When is a pump test on a test bench advisable?

A test bench measurement is useful when the hydraulic performance needs to be verified after a repair or when deviations from expected operation need to be investigated. It goes beyond a simple functional or leak test. Under defined conditions, relevant operating values can be recorded and compared with target values or a reference characteristic curve. The specific benefit depends on the agreed test objective.

What information can be provided by a measured pump characteristic curve?

A measured characteristic curve shows how the delivery head and flow rate behave across different operating points. Together with performance data, it allows for an assessment of whether the pump achieves the agreed-upon hydraulic performance and whether any anomalies exist. The results can serve as a basis for acceptance testing or comparison. Therefore, the scope of measurement, tolerances, and documentation should be agreed upon before testing.

How do we check whether a pump can be tested on an existing test bench?

We compare the pump design, connection size, expected flow rate, pressure, and electrical connection data with the available test bench. Additionally, the medium, installation, direction of rotation, controllability, and desired measuring points are relevant. If a requirement falls outside the standard ranges, we examine possible adaptations or an alternative test concept. Therefore, the technical data should be fully coordinated before delivery.

How are acceptance criteria for a pump test determined?

Before testing, we agree on measured values, operating points, tolerances, reference curve, and the scope of documentation. Depending on the project, conveying height, conveying volume, power consumption, and other values may be relevant. Clear criteria enable a transparent evaluation instead of subsequent interpretation of individual measurement points.

Why is a pump characteristic curve recorded over several operating points?

A single operating point only shows a portion of the hydraulic behavior. Multiple measurement points reveal whether the curve and power consumption are plausible across the relevant operating range. This makes it easier to distinguish deviations from measurement errors or an unsuitable setting.
