Important questions about the repair of induction and stirring coils
What types of damage typically occur to water-cooled induction and stirring coils?
Potential damage can affect electrical insulation, conductors, connections, and the cooling system. Leaks, deposits, or insufficient cooling can lead to localized overheating and consequential damage. Mechanical stress and operational influences must also be considered. Therefore, we inspect electrical and mechanical components as well as the cooling system simultaneously to address the root cause of the damage thoroughly, rather than just superficially.
When is a local repair sufficient and when is a rewinding of the coil necessary?
A local repair is an option if the damage is clearly localized and the remaining winding, including insulation and cooling channels, remains in a sound condition. In cases of extensive aging, multiple damaged areas, or insulation problems that are not clearly defined, rewinding is often more practical. We base our decision on the findings, measurements, design, and anticipated operating load.
How can we reconstruct an older coil without complete drawing documentation?
We record geometry, connections, conductor routing, cooling paths, insulation structure, and existing operating data directly on the component. From this, we create technical documentation as a basis for repair or rebuild. Wear and previous modifications must be distinguished from the original target condition. Therefore, whether a safe reconstruction is possible is decided on a project-specific basis after the initial assessment.
What tests are advisable after the repair or rewinding of an induction coil?
The scope of testing depends on the design, cooling system, and extent of any repairs. Depending on the coil, we test electrical characteristics, insulation, continuity, leak tightness, and the mechanical condition of the connections and cooling paths. The results are documented against agreed-upon target values or existing reference data.
