Important questions about the repair of gearboxes and compressors

How do we assess whether a damaged gear needs to be reused, reworked, or replaced?

We assess the type and depth of damage, the contact pattern, wear, and the geometry of the affected gear teeth. We also consider the bearing arrangement, alignment, lubrication, and potential causes related to the load profile. Superficial damage requires a different approach than cracks, chips, or advanced material loss. Based on the overall analysis, we determine whether rework, repair, or replacement is technically feasible.

Under what conditions can gearbox parts be reproduced according to a sample?

Reproduction based on a sample is possible if the geometry, material, tolerances, and functional requirements can be reliably determined. To achieve this, we measure the existing component and consider connection dimensions, load, gearing, and heat treatment. Wear on the sample must not be transferred to the new part without verification. Therefore, missing data is supplemented through technical evaluation and, where possible, by existing drawings or operational information.

What is evaluated during a test run after gearbox repair?

During the test run, depending on the test concept, we observe, among other things, running behavior, noise, vibration, temperature, and leak tightness. This allows us to verify whether the bearings, gearing, and assembled components work together as intended. The test run does not replace every load situation the final system will experience, but it provides controlled verification before delivery. Therefore, the scope of testing and acceptance criteria are defined in advance.

How do we decide between repairing and replacing an industrial gearbox?

We assess the condition of housings, gears, shafts, and bearings, as well as the availability or remanufacturability of required parts. Additionally, we compare downtime, technical risks, interfaces, expected remaining service life, and life cycle costs. If the basic structure is sound, repair may be economical. In cases of extensive damage or unsuitable operating conditions, replacement may be the more robust solution.

What causes do we need to clarify to prevent a gearbox or bearing failure from occurring again?

In addition to the damaged component, we examine lubrication, alignment, bearing fits, gearing, foundation, load distribution, and potential overloads. Contamination, temperature, and vibrations can also cause consequential damage. Only when the cause of the damage has been plausibly identified can a long-term repair be designed.
